Wednesday’s Word–Plutocracy


Today’s word is – “plutocracy”

plutocracy [plu·toc·ra·cy ] noun. Pronounced “ploo-tok-ruh-see

1. the rule or control of society by the wealthy
2. a state or government characterized by the rule of the wealthy
3. a class that exercises power by virtue of its wealth


In a plutocracy, the people are ruled by the wealthy few. We know that’s not true of our democracy.

Origin – 1650s, from Greek ploutokratia “rule or power of the wealthy or of wealth,” from ploutos “wealth” + -kratia “rule”
