Word of caution for all friends and acquaintances on Facebook. If you come across a profile that looks like mine, please check the profile well beyond the banner and album pics before you get into liking, friending, starting a conversation or anything else. There’s an account that’s clearly a hacked older version of my Author Page. I came across this account impersonating me today totally by chance.
Real account: My Facebook author page is – http://facebook.com/authorsgbasu
This is what my real banner looks like:
This profile (http://facebook.com/sgbasuauthor) was clearly not mine (the profile photo is of two girls I’ve never seen in my life) but they had an old banner of mine (complete with the website url, my twitter handle, and details of my books. To make matters worse, their album also contains my photos and graphics. No, I have not given them permission to use that banner or my photos.
Obviously shaken by it, I reported the profile to FB. Here’s what I got back from them:
We’ll let you know when we’ve reviewed the profile you reported for pretending to be someone they’re not. If it goes against one of our Community Standards, we’ll remove it or follow up with them.

I hoped for a quick resolution.
I did get a quick reply but it was no resolution.
Thanks for letting us know about something you think may go against our Community Standards. Reports like yours are an important part of making Facebook a safe and welcoming environment.
In this case, we reviewed the profile you reported and found that it doesn’t go against our Community Standards.
Note: If you see something on someone’s profile that shouldn’t be on Facebook, be sure to report the content (ex: a photo or video), not the entire profile. This will help us review your report more accurately.

Okay, so guess it’s okay for anyone to steal my banner and have my business information on their profile?
Anyway, I went to report the individual graphics and photos, but guess what? FB has no way of having them reported. All I get to is a suggestion of blocking the offender so I don’t have to see what they are stealing from me. Awesome, right?
I don’t know what to do at this point. I did submit feedback for the resolution they provided and detailed the issue again. But I’m not holding my breath.
Only wanted to share this with everyone, especially ones with Pages. There might be people out there pretending to be you or pretending to be persons authorized to handle your business.
Also, if anyone has had this issue before and knows how to get it resolved, please, please, let me know.
What a day! I think I’m going to open a bottle of red and mull over what a friend just told me-If people want to pretend to be you, guess you’ve arrived?
